I am Maya Sherpa.
I am an artist. My goal is to evoke emotion through means of video, performance and costume. I hope to disrupt the comfortable by prompting reactions and allowing the compassion of humanity to seep in. The use of humour facilitates the bizarre and absurd elements in my work and create an accessible path for a wider audience. My eye for the potential in rejected objects, aids this and has indirectly established my kitsch DIY aesthetic. Self-portraiture allows me to immerse in my work and project playful energy and theatrical characters. Colour stimulates my practice — it enables me to escape the muted colour palette of reality and delve into the otherworldly with boundless constraints. I find comfort in these other worlds and believe they have greater power in prompting us to question and explore our own beliefs and systems.
